            Interesting approach on cost optimization through model switching. I went through

            a similar journey but from a different angle — instead of changing providers, I

            focused on reducing the *number of calls* itself.

            My agent was making ~10,000 model calls in 2 days (~$50-100). After optimization:

            ≤200 calls/day (~$1/day). 96% reduction.

            Key insights:

            1. Localize heartbeats — don't call the model for routine health checks

            2. Batch operations — one call for multiple tasks beats many single calls

            3. Cache aggressively — never ask the same thing twice

            4. Smart routing — cheap models for simple tasks, expensive for complex

            OpenRouter solves "which model?" The harder question is "do I need to call at all?"
